New Author! A huge welcome to Lexie Kahanovitz
We are so delighted to welcome Lexie Kahanovitz, Author and Script Writer, to CWLA. We asked Lexie a few questions to learn a little more about her writing and inspiration.
How long have you been writing stories and scripts for children’s TV?
Gosh, I can’t believe it’s been about a decade! Writing for kids is something I sort of stumbled into, but in hindsight makes so much sense. Also – what I love about the shows I get to write for is that I never have to “dumb” anything down because it’s for a younger audience.
What has most influenced the way you write?
That’s a no-brainer: having a toddler! I have the privilege of watching a brain develop a sense of humour in real time. Right now, physical comedy reigns supreme. As a result, I get to flex my screwball comedy muscle – which is an exhausting delight.
What inspired you to become a television writer?
The first time I remember getting really upset, and I mean like wailing-like-an-old-widow upset, was when I missed Pee Wee’s Playhouse on TV as a toddler. It was probably obvious then. But I can only ever remember thinking about the world in terms of storytelling. It’s how my brain works.
Do any of the stories you write come from your own experiences and memories of your childhood?
Lots! I’ve had such a weird childhood that involves circus folk, competing in Madison Square Garden as a horseback rider, and travelling all around the States via train and budget hotel. One day I’ll write about my circus and pony days. In the meantime, seeing all walks of life from a very young age has given me such great inspiration for off kilter characters.
Are there any books that influence your writing?
Heck yes. Satire’s my favourite, so I read anything by Gary Shteyngart. I love you, Super Sad True Love Story! I’m a history and science nut too. What was the question? Right. Reading is hard to do with a toddler! But when I’m reading history, science, or a delightful satire, it kicks my mind into gear.
Which is your favourite character you’ve written for?
I love writing the mean, grumpy ones! On City Island, there’s a character who’s a lot like Oscar the Grouch. His name is Detritus, and he’s an angry plastic bag. I don’t know why, but he feels like my soul mate.
Tell us about your writing routine.
Where, when and how do you like to write? I’m a deadline gal. I can write anywhere as long as I’m slightly freaking out about getting a script in to my story editor, which I always do. Thanks, cortisol!
Are there any exciting projects you’re working on at the moment?
Yes! Some projects I’m lucky enough that I can’t talk about. But since having a kid, I’m super driven to create comedy about the climate crisis. Children are inheriting such a bad lot. I want to help them feel empowered as they tackle the greatest existential threat our species has ever faced (thanks in advance, kids!).
